What Movers Can and Cannot Move: Full Guide to a Safe Move
Hiring a professional moving company means trusting experts to transport your belongings safely. But not everything can legally or safely go on a moving truck. Born to Move strictly follows federal FMCSA regulations, DOT rules, and state safety codes. Some items simply cannot be moved, even if customers request it.
This guide clearly explains what movers cannot move, why, and how to handle restricted items to ensure a smooth, safe, and compliant relocation.
Items Born to Move Cannot Move (Restricted by Federal & State Law)
The items below are prohibited by federal law and local fire codes. These rules are not negotiable โ they exist to prevent fires, explosions, and contamination inside moving trucks.
Hazardous / Flammable Materials
Born to Move must refuse any of these items:
-
Lighter fluid
-
Gasoline or diesel
-
Propane tanks (full or empty)
-
Fireworks
-
Aerosol cans or compressed air cylinders
-
Automotive chemicals (oil, brake fluid, coolant)
-
Paints, solvents, varnishes, or thinners
-
Fertilizers or pool chemicals
Why movers canโt take them:
Flammable liquids, pressurized containers, and reactive chemicals can ignite or explode during transit due to heat, static electricity, or vibration. Federal law prohibits transportation of hazardous materials in household moving trucks.
Items Restricted by Certain States and Safety Regulations
Some states regulate additional categories that movers cannot transport. To stay fully compliant across all locations we serve, Born to Move does not move:
-
Weapons: firearms, ammunition, swords, large knives
-
Perishable foods: frozen goods, refrigerated items, or anything that can spoil
-
Food in glass jars (high breakage and contamination risk)
-
Prescription drugs needed for immediate use
These restrictions are in place for liability, contamination, and health concerns.
Live Items Movers Cannot Transport
Live Plants
Many states restrict moving soil across state lines due to pest and disease risks. Plants also cannot survive long periods inside a closed truck with no airflow or light.
Pets or Any Living Being
No moving company is allowed to transport live animals inside moving trucks due to safety and humane treatment standards.
Valuables and Personal Essentials You Must Move Yourself
These items are not illegal to move, but liability insurance does not cover them, and they are too sensitive or valuable to risk in a moving truck. Born to Move recommends transporting these in your personal car. We can help you load and unload them, but they must travel with you.

How to Prepare Items Movers Cannot Take
Follow these steps to avoid delays on moving day:
1. Dispose of hazardous items safely
Use a local recycling or hazardous waste facility.
2. Separate valuables and personal documents
Keep them packed in a small personal box or backpack and transport them in your own vehicle.
3. Plan ahead for plants
Short-distance: transport in your car.
Long-distance: consider giving them away.
4. Keep medications accessible
You may need them during transit or unexpectedly.
Why These Rules Exist
Customers often donโt realize how dangerous some common household items become inside a moving truck. Temperature changes, pressure shifts, and vibrations can cause:
-
Fires
-
Chemical leaks
-
Explosions
-
Toxic fumes
-
Pest contamination
-
Insurance voidance
-
DOT violations at checkpoints
A single prohibited item can put your entire shipment and our crew at risk. These rules keep everyone safe and ensure a smooth, lawful relocation.
Final Reminder
Born to Move cannot be held liable for any prohibited items or valuables transported against this policy.
Please review this guide before moving day and contact us if you have questions about a specific item.
