How to check the US DOT number?

If you’re looking for a moving company and would like to check the US DOT number, it’s super simple. All you have to do is just to ask the manager or whoever’s on the other line for the US DOT number. You can also try to find it on the website which is most likely located in the footer of the website. If you can’t find it, you can always call the moving company and ask them for a US DOT number, that is pretty standard. There is nothing to be afraid of moving companies that have to have a US DOT number. if they refuse to provide it, or they come up with any other reasons not to give you one, it’s a bad sign. I would personally never hire a moving company that you don’t trust and making the trust and providing a DOT number is crucial for both sides.

This is inside information because all of the moving companies operating out of state have to provide a minimum of $10,000 cargo coverage to obtain an MC number. MC number states to operate out of state and that your vehicle is registered in.

So if you are looking for a US DOT number, you might as well look up the MC number, if you are moving out of state.

  1. Step 1 – go to https://safer.fmcsa.dot.gov/CompanySnapshot.aspx
  2. Step 2 – type in the USDOT number of the company that you would like to check.
  3. Step 3 – click search.
  4. Step 4 – now you have company information.

Make sure to check the operation status, it should say: Authorized for Hire. If the company is authorized for hire, this means they can operate, in-state and out-of-state.

Now you can see seven icons where you can check and see the driving crash indicator, hours of service, vehicle, maintenance control, substances, alcohol, and driver fitness.

Firstly, people check crash indicators and is there any record of consuming alcohol while driving? Plus, I would check unsafe driving measures.

In each category, you can click on overall performance and you can see the last time the company got a ticket for violation and what kind of violation it was. You just have to scroll to the bottom.

You can click on any item and you can check inspection history.

If you like the safety score, and if there are no crashes or controlled substances in alcohol, you can definitely hire the moving company of your choice after checking their safety score and the Federal Motor Carrier safety administration website.
