Claremont’s History

The Serrano Indians were the first inhabitants of Claremont. A village was discovered near Foothill and Indian Hill Boulevards. After Mexico’s independence from Spain in 1834, Claremont became part of Rancho San Jose, owned by Ricardo Vejar and Don Palomares.

The first Anglo-European settlers arrived in 1871, claiming 156 acres near Indian Hill Boulevard as hunters and beekeepers. The Santa Fe Railroad spurred Claremont’s growth, but it was Pomona College, founded in 1888, that secured the city’s future. Claremont thrived during a boom in the citrus industry, shipping fruits worldwide. Mexican labor formed neighborhoods, and post-World War II housing developments replaced orchards. The city expanded from 3 ½ to 13 square miles.
